About my work:

(Intro) For the past four years, I have been involved in the Photography program.  The idea of working with film cameras and the new digital technologies have attracted me since Junior High.  My work here at this school has made it possible for me to cultivate, not only my technical skills, but my artistic vision.

(Your Plans) Next year I am planning to attend Cal State Fullerton where I will continue to focus on a Minor in photography and a Major in Journalism.  My goal is to become one day a professional photo journalist.

(Your experiences)  One of the best experiences working in this program has been the joy of working closely with other students who share the same passions as I do.  I would always remember the long hours of work trying to meet the deadlines for yearbook.  The ability to work with new laptops and the new Canon 30D was also important since we basically got access to professional quality equipment.

(Looking at my work) The past four years have gone by extremely fast.  Looking at the body of work I have accumulated over the years, I see the growth and sophistication I gained.  I can see the change in the complexity of subjects and themes that my photographs have taken on.  I also see how the technical qualities of the print itself have improved from those first prints in the darkroom.  New angles, print manipulation, and specially discovering new artists that have influenced my work are the culmination of a work which got recognized in several competitions.  Receiving first place in 2007 at the District Talent Show is perhaps the most important recognition.

(Closing statement)  My involvement during the past four years in the music program ranged from exhibits, yearbook assignments, and volunteer work.  Here at school I was an officer in our Photo Club.  My community work included photographing a series of events for the YMCA.  I also got a chance to exhibit my work in several exhibits.  All of these opportunities have provided me with both the experience and knowledge to not only appreciate Photography as an art form, but to also become involved.  Of special significance was my involvement as a yearbook staff, no matter what field or job I end up taking, I will always remember the hard work and friends I made.

·       Senior Year (example for Photo):

My senior year involvement ranged from taking a Digital Photography class with Mrs. Crail to volunteering as a photographer for the local YMCA.  In addition, I had an opportunity to submit my work to several exhibits.

My main focus for the year was improving both my technique and experiment with Photoshop in the Digital Photography class.  The current photographs on this page are a small sample of some of my favorite work.

Taking portraits, capturing the essence of the individual I think is the strength of my work.  It is also what I enjoy the most, people.

There are several artists that have influenced my work.  I think of my style as a contemporary collage of Andy Warhol meeting Ansel Adams over a print where coffee has been spilled after reading a short story by Kafka.

One thing is obvious for me, the ability to have new equipment in our lab has certainly opened the possibility to exploring uncharted territories.

·       Junior Year (example for Theater):

During my junior year, I was part of IB Theatre class.  The improvement in my scene work was noticed by Ms. Klein and it helped me to prepare better for the final calls for the Spring Musical.  I got a nice small supporting role.  It was the culmination of long hours of rehearsals and dedication that several reviewers noticed my performance too.  It is a joy and privilege to work on a stage that is maintained to such high professional standards.

I was also glad that a small grant from the Academy allowed me to take some private vocal lessons.  Working one-on-one made it possible for me to gain the confidence and skills I so much needed to stand on the big stage of Plummer Auditorium and sing and dance my heart out.  It was the perfect culmination for a great year.  I should also point out that I worked backstage during the Fall play.

·       Sophomore Year (Digital Arts):

The first year of Digital Arts was a fast pace introduction to the world of multi-media design.  Taking three classes every day and creating projects that fulfill requirements in History, English and Multi Media Design is fun, but also challenging.

My favorite project for this year had to be the Peace Maker Mural project.  It is an opportunity for as to redesign the look of the school.  Besides our work with Photoshop, digital photography plays a key role since we have to get the right angle and lighting on the building where our mural would be installed.  Of course the research involved is also crucial since we have to find the appropriate language and images that capture the essence of the individual.  During this year I also got a chance to build my first webpage using Microsoft Office, this was a skill that I put to work volunteering for the Spanish Club creating their first web page.

Winter Choral Concert:  Time To Sing

December 13, 2007, Plummer Auditorium

I got a chance to see the Winter Choral Concert with a couple of my friends and family right before Christmas.  This is always the perfect opportunity to shift gears into the Holiday Spirit since the music is all about the Holiday Season.

I was truly impressed by some of the voices that were featured with solo numbers.  Of course, the upbeat tunes from the Jazz Ensemble were extremely fun and showcased some beautiful arrangements of well known songs.  As a painter, I always pay close attention to the lighting effects and how they help create the appropriate mood.

The show is a tradition by now and always brings back alumni that join in during the grand finale.  It is a great concert, a bit long, but worth it.  Especially for all those relatives who have friends or family members on stage, like I did.  It is the perfect way to get in the Holiday Spirit.

Fullerton Museum Center:  A Way Of Life

March 12, 2008, Fullerton Museum Center

The Fullerton Museum Center exhibit on the history of the Blues was quiet educational.  The actual name of the exhibit was “The Delta Blues Project” and it featured photographs and even video of some of the most enigmatic representatives of this genre of music in the 20th century.

Gail Mooney was the photographer who felt it was important to document, not just the famous, but the little known musicians that travel the small clubs of the Deep South.  It was clear that the photographer was not only capturing the individual’s face, but she was after something deeper.  She was trying to capture a way of life during a particular moment in the history of this country.

I have to highly recommend the exhibit, not only to visual artists, but anyone who is interested in music or American culture.  The portraits are fresh and truly capture the personality of the musician and their times.
